i am absolutely disgusted. i feel this incredible weight crushing down on the american people, and i name it hatred and division.
my wife and i listened to the RNC speeches last night, and with the exception of Huckabee's speech, all of them left me feeling dirty and used. There was absolutely no talk of issues, unless they were bashing on Obama's outlined plans (with straw man arguments and outright falsehoods no less). in fact, most of the attacks weren't on positions, they were attacks on his life, family, and education.
it disgusted me that they dismiss him graduating from Harvard law as the president of the law review as trivial. That is a great accomplishment, and they must be intimidated by it if they had to attack him so personally and venomously. a stark difference between the two parties message: Dems were about unity, cooperation, hope and prosperity with a vision that they outlined to bring America into the 21st century; while the republicans seem to be all about slander, hypocrisy, and displacement.
Sen. Obama did not lead me to believe that all republicans were born wealthy, what he did lead me to believe is that all Americans have the same primary interests and dreams. The RNC speakers did not convince me that Gov Palin is more experienced than Sen. Obama, they did convince me that their message of hate and intolerance are alive and well in the USA. It is ok for the RNC speakers to take shots at Obama, his family, and anything else that they want to, but the media is evil for looking into Palin's questionable record as a governor and mayor.
What has really set me off this morning however, is the difference between how the liberal and conservatives conduct themselves in the blogosphere and media. i am flat out offended by the double standard the republicans demand, and all the insults that they spew while ducking all issues except abortion and offshore drilling.
a depression has come over me, and i'm afraid that it will not abate until the Debates begin, and at that point it could just intensify. The uplifting, positive, unity theme of the Democratic convention (and i have always been identified more as a Libertarian/Republican for my views, but this republican party does not speak in my interests at all) that gave me hope for the future of our country has been smashed by a blunt object of malice, smears, and lies to make a good sound bite. Hearing Biden's and Obama's response to these attacks makes me respect them even more, because i know that i would struggle to hold my tongue back when lied about as much as they have been. for them to stay on the high road in such difficult times, with so much at stake for the future of the world is inspiring, yet the cynicism that i've always felt about the US government has come back in a wave of depression because of my inability to not ignore one side of an argument.
i see how the American people are going to be fooled into follow this demagogue with breasts, who whines and complains when her life is scrutinized, but has no qualms with lying, slandering, or hitting her opponents below the belt. She is the typical born again christian, forgetting the most important message of her "savior": love your neighbor. her hate rhetoric screams to me "SwiftBoat Veterans for Truth", which was proven to be based on half truths and outright lies. this is the same party that blasted, smeared, and evoked as an elitist John Kerry, who served in the same military as John McCain during the same time period, for his service and now expects us to drop all other issues because McCain served his country and was in the Hanoi hilton. does anyone else see the hypocrisy here, or am i all alone?
I'm disgusted by the entire breadth of this horrific period of american politics, and i pray that the cooler heads, more temperate worldview prevail and keep our country out of the hands of another religious fundamentalist nutjob bent on beating all that oppose them down.
religious fundamentalism is evil, pure and simple. it doesn't matter if it is Islamic, christian, Shinto, or Buddhist fundamentalism, they all end up the same: We are the chosen people and all who disagree with us are our enemies, in fact they aren't really even human. the next step is always that because they aren't human like us, they don't deserve to live. all radical fundamentalists follow this train of thought through to its conclusion. it is not a question of 'if' they will do this, it is just a matter of 'when'.
i cry as liberty dies, and my beloved democracy is thrown to the wayside in a current of deception, deceit, and powerhungry greed.
