i really don't understand how people think this campaign isn't about issues. all this personalities are what will decide this election is just absolute craziness to me.
our energy policy has needed a serious looking at for a decade, and very little progress has been made.
our schools have continued to test poorly on the world stage, especially in the critical math/science area.
health care should be a fundamental right that a 21st century society provides for its people, not a monetary decision.
environment issues and the effect of our policies on the environment.
the policies that our country has taken over the past 30-50 years have left a bad taste in the worlds mouth, and this debacle in Iraq has stretched the integrity of America into a question, instead of trust. There have been times where this opinion was much higher during this time, because the leaders at that time earned the respect of other nations by their example, not threats of force.
There are hundreds of other issues that matter to one group or another, euthanasia, Veterans benefits, social security, jobs and the economy, abortion.
This is a list of issues that can fill out an entire speech, i saw them do it at the DNC.
a solid outline of things that are working in smaller scales, that could be adapted to a national level with energy and how a policy embracing an infrastructure change could assist in stimulating the economy. their outline was intertwined, with each policy fitting into place with the rest to form a cohesive america that returned to the sense of family, community, safety and security of the 1950's.
From the McCain campaign all i've gotten is that they won't raise my taxes (just increase what my taxable income is...), will open up drilling for Oil, make nuclear facilities everywhere, and the same platitudes that GWB gave about solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, blah blah (we still don't see any push for alternative energy, except in a few states). Health care has been vague at best, along with the rest of their policies. (and don't tell me to go look at their web site, i did and it's the exact same as GWB circa 2004. thanks). On the foreign policy front, we have been told by McCain, "And i know the good and evil in this world. i know how to work with other nations who share our view, and stand up to those who don't." Palin also will say in her first interview that her comment about US troop being on a mission from God that they weren't her exact words. when informed they are, she goes into a speech that Lincoln gave and defends it fairly well. (i disagree with her argument, but it is not unfounded.) also heard alot about abortion from the Republicans.
So, with what ive been told, and this election is based on personality not issues, i really have to base my electoral decision on how well i think the ticket will deal with foreign policy.
Based on the conventions and the ad campaigns so far, what i have seen is a series of attack ads from the McCain campaign, little talk of policy issues, and verbal hate speech from the speakers at the convention and the Fox Radio announcer Rush Limbaugh (or as i like to call him, Rush Prothero), who flails divisive rhetoric and contorts everything until he can blame it on the liberals. listening to him is sometimes like someone playing 7 steps from liberals... This would translate onto the world stage as a more brash GWB, who's arrogance when dealing with other nations has placed our nation in a very delicate position, and i feel that GWB's video of a pack of wolves waiting to attack america is oddly accurate. it is oddly accurate because we have been shooting this pack of wolves from the air for so long, that once our plane runs out of fuel and we are on the ground they have us surrounded and eliminate the threat to themselves. They don't want an American Empire, they would much prefer the old USA that was a beacon of light in the dark promising fairness and the backbone to stand up for the light, not a cop shining his halogen light into your eyes from 12 inches away.
on the other ticket, i've heard two individuals who care about the issues, have stuck to their point of view and tried to persuade you to agree with them. When under attack, they have stood up for themselves, but not tried to press the confrontation. They have shown great restraint and honor, combined with the determination of what is right and just. They will be able to deal with leaders of foreign nations as equals, and work out compromises that improve things for all parties.
So to sum up my choice, i'll use this analogy. We have two High school athletes, one is the agressive star football player who did well enough to pass in his classes, while the other is the guy who played football, basketball, ran track, was in the chorus and head of student clubs while carrying a 3.9 GPA.
to me, the more well rounded a candidate is the more prepared he will be for the unknown situations ahead. it is time for us to elect a leader that is worthy of american votes, and will put our ideals and purpose back into play on the world stage. One who will lead with thoughtfulness, integrity, and fight for the best interest of all the people with every breath in the mold of Kennedy, FDR, and Lincoln. It is time to have a leader that can correct this mess that non transparent government has gotten us into, and heal the wounds that our interfering in other country's politics have caused.
I do not think that McCain/Palin have the temperament or ideological makeup to do this. From what i've seen Obama/Biden will be able to bridge the divide that GWB's cowboy mentality has created in the world. They are the ones who can bridge the Republican/Democrat divide and make congress work for the people again. They have the plan to move america out of the 20th century and be as prosperous in the 21st century.
That is what this election is about, and i look forward to the debates confirming the opinions i have now.
