i thought this was a well explained reasoning for supporting Obama in the election. there were many strong things that he said, but the most powerful to me was the soldier story. Waiting 4 years to join the service and his grave having the Islamic symbol was an engaging story, and a great counter to the un-American sentiment that is rolling through the Republican party.
Rush Prothero continued to spell it out, and asked me to quote him so i shall, "The only reason for his supporting Obama is R A C E race. thats it and you can quote me."
MSNBC is really focusing on this attempt to split the electorate, and i thought that Gen. Powell was spot on in his assessment of this split into the moderate republicans, and the neocon right establishment who has grown into the dominant voice of the party thanks to Bush 43 and his fundamentalist ideology. I've always been a moderate with conservative tendencies, but this version of the party alienates my social beliefs and i strongly disagree with their philosophy on energy and the direction this country needs to take.
My mind was made up prior to the Powell endorsement, because i have the hope, justified by my observations and research into the platform of Obama/Biden, that Obama is much more middle of the road than McCain/Palin are trying to paint him. His judgments of the direction we need to take this country are very similar to my own, and i think that as someone who is attempting to unify the country he will stay closer to the middle of the political spectrum when moving this country forward. i see in him the capacity to be a great unifier, he knows how to pull at the human spirit and tap something rarely felt and very powerful, and that is important in leaders at at pivotal moment. i think his ability to reach compromise with those who fundamentally disagree with him is something we need in the person who's primary job is dealing with foreign leaders, especially with the way the Bush 43 has treated the rest of the worlds leaders.
Gen. Powell's endorsement will probably not do much, but i hope that it is able to restrain some of the more violent fringe elements from attempting the revolution i've heard whispers of should McCain lose the election.
