I've been reading this series by Terry Goodkind and have to say it is one of the best fantasy series ever written. great characters, great philosophy, and overall just unlike anything else i've read.
The series of novels has spun a TV series on ABC, "Legend of the Seeker." i've only caught one episode so far, as it is on late Saturday nights, but i wasn't greatly impressed. hopefully it will grow into its own and i just caught a bad episode, and there are a few reasons to hope for the best, but we'll see.
Wizard's First Rule is the title of the first book in the series, and i suggest it as good reading to anyone who likes fantasy mixed in with their philosophy.

After watching a few of the Legend of the Seeker episodes, I have to say I'm not getting a better feeling about it. Not that its a bad series, far from it. Just that it is not the Sword of Truth series that I read.
The novels are gritty, with much detail paid to minor details because they mattered later in the series. The television series, in contrast, is a fun and campy adventure, and while it uses some of the details from the novels for flavor, really don't do justice to those details to make them matter in the long run. And it really doesnt need them, since the focus is on the adventure, rather than expanding characterizations and rather poigniant views of politics, people, fate, murder and love.
So if I was watching this series, thinking it was a new series by the same director as Hercules and Xena, then yeah, its a good adventure story and I'd be looking forward to the next episode. But since I was looking forward to a Sword of Truth TV show, I'll DVR the next episode so I can skim over its inaccuracies and ignore that its based on Goodkind's novels.
