Had to take my wife to the Airport in KC, and got to hear Glenn Beck tell a lady to pull all her money out of the stock market, that is her money and if you don't do it now you will have nothing.
first off, with the dow dropping to nearly half of its high, anyone that was in the market is going to have taken fairly large losses. if they were invested for the long term, this is really just one of those times you have to trust to make it back on the upswing. if you were near retirement age, your adviser would have told you to change assets and diversify like crazy a long time ago.
Second, telling people to do this, and all the hypersensitivity on the squawk box leading to no one having confidence in the market, is aggravating the situation. (of course, it is my opinion that because there is a new guy on the hook, and they are going to have to scream about how horrible he is for a long time for the public to forget about Bush and Republican rule, that there is an agenda of economic nihilism amongst their leaders. but that's just me)
third, if the endgame turns out to be that Obama does fail, why do they think american dollars are going to be worth anything? if the American economy collapses, it will trigger a global depression in most of the westernized world. This will leave only countries like Russia, China, India, and nations of the Middle East (minus Israel, which will fall if the U.S. does...) and maybe a South/Central american coalition as powers in the world, and those dollars they have pulled out of the stock market will be worth nothing. (i certainly wouldn't accept legal tender from a defunct nation...) There is no glorious revolution where republicans take back washington and save america in that endgame. The world (which doesn't like us much in case you've forgotten) would feast upon the empty carcass of our once proud nation.
fourth, there is the argument put forth that Bush was treated like this for his whole presidency. this is flat out not true, and i'd like everyone to think back to 2002. Americans stood behind the president in overwhelming numbers and there was a wave of national pride as we entered conflict in the middle east. Then came the divisive decisions that broke the president Bush's support: Iraq, gay marriage amendment, the 2004 election's smear politics, disclosure of blackwater and other no bid contracts and unethical behavior by contractors and government entities. These are the things that splintered the nation and caused president Bush's support to become what it was in 2008.
fifth, to claim that you want the "policies" of president Obama's to fail, and are still rooting for America to succeed is just contradictory. President Obama was elected because of his belief in these policies, and his ability to share that vision with the American people. His policies are who he is, and what he believes in, and they are why he was elected along with all the other Democrats who are now serving in Washington. It was belief in these policies and them succeeding that got the people of this nation to come out in numbers to elect President Obama, and to wish that to fail is the same as wishing America to fail.
With this statement, Prothero is giving the lie to his oft stated "I want everyone in this country to succeed." he needs to amend it to "as long as they conform to my idea of what is best for the country." The american people in the vast majority do not agree with you, and you can bask in the glow of CPAC, but it showed that you didn't prepare any remarks.
There are so many things interrelated at this time, and that makes moving forward a treacherous journey. If people have ideas that will help (and please, don't say tax cuts. i'm so sick of that answer, it is not a panacea), start putting them out there. I've put most ideas that i've gotten on this message board, and posted some of them in other online places. thats the only medium i have.
These media personalities need to drop their selfish agendas and start getting out of the way or helping. i can understand not agreeing with everything he does, but to openly wish him failure and to provoke the populous into imploding is akin to a seditious movement, or a terrorist group. if ever there was a time to drop rhetoric and divisive politics it is now, and if we don't the comparison to Rome will be swift in coming.
